چکیده

Passage of the 1990Amendments to the Clean Air Act made it clear that maximum available control technology (“MACT”) regulations on the emission of hazardous air pollutants (“HAPS”) from process heaters and industrial boilers, used extensively in the petroleum and petrochemical industries, would be promulgated under congressional mandate by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in the year 2000. Unfortunately, i t had also become clear that under.Mnding, the “goodscience” upon which we aspire to base sensible regulations, was simply non-existent and, further, that the little field data then extant was severely flawed. To amend those deficiencies, a 4-year $7-million fundamental attack on the origin and fate of trace toxic emissions in the external combustion of gaseous hydrocarbon fuels has been conducted by a government-university-industry collaboration I that has been, by all accounts, one of the most successful ever.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions from a coal-fired pilot FBC system.

Due to the extensive amount of data suggesting the hazards of these compounds, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Priority Pollutant List. Emissions of these PAHs in the flue gas from the combustion of four coals were measured during four 1000h combustion runs using the 0.1MW heat-input (MWth) bench-scale fluidized bed combustor (FBC). An...

Gaseous emissions during concurrent combustion of biomass and non-recyclable municipal solid waste

BACKGROUND Biomass and municipal solid waste offer sustainable sources of energy; for example to meet heat and electricity demand in the form of combined cooling, heat and power. Combustion of biomass has a lesser impact than solid fossil fuels (e.g. coal) upon gas pollutant emissions, whilst energy recovery from municipal solid waste is a beneficial component of an integrated, sustainable wast...

Emissions modeling of fluidised bed co-combustion of poultry litter and peat.

Gaseous emissions from the fluidised bed co-combustion of 50% w/w chicken litter and peat were monitored and recorded. Emission data were used to create a dispersion model for a proposed site on a poultry farm in Ireland. Variables within the combustion unit influenced both combustion and emission levels of pollutants such as SO(2) and NO(x), CO. Concentrations of atmospheric pollutants decreas...

Life-cycle Emissions Analysis of Alternative Fuels for Heavy Vehicles

This report examines available information on low and ultra-low sulfur diesel and alternative fuels for heavy vehicles in terms of their emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. Most of this information is from overseas, and has been used to estimate emissions for heavy vehicles using such fuels in Australia. This is done within a life-cycle framework that considers both the pre-combus...

Numerical study of the effect of fuel injection timing on the ignition delay, performance parameters and exhaust emission of gas/dual fuel diesel engine using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Today, due to the various usage of compression ignition engines in urban transportation, as well as the need to reduce exhaust emissions and control fuel consumption, the use of alternative fuels has become common in diesel engines. Gaseous fuel is one of the most common alternative fuels that can be used in diesel engines. The utilization of alternative fuels in compression ignition engines re...
